One of the most common questions we at Rocking the Daisies get asked is how we go about picking the artists on our line up, and this is in fact quite a complicated process. Being a small team of permanent staff for this Cape Town Festival we have a few ways of keeping up to date with who is new in the zoo.

Firstly we have many social ‘seeders’ who keep their helpful little ears close to the ground. When they hear of an interesting new act making waves, it’s a hop, skip and a jump before one of the Rocking the Daisies crew at a gig watching their live performance to report back to the rest of the team.

The second most effective way of finding awesome new talent is having talent find us. Band submissions officially open in July but we already have plenty of artists emailing us daily. Derek Sivers from CD Baby has a few pointers for fresh bands starting out. We especially like points 4 and 5 that focus on email bios and how to get you noticed. <Click here> for the article.

This was festival Director, Brian Little’s response to his experience.

- What is Sakifo and how did you end up there?

Sakifo is a 3-day music festival and the biggest in Reunion. At its heart is world music, but it is not confined by traditional styles and also includes electro, rock, reggae etc. Some of the worlds leading artists have performed there.

Representing Rocking the Daisies, I was invited as part of a South African contingent that would also form part of a group of invited delegates from around the world to the first Indian Ocean Music Market (IOMMA). The same organisers of Sakifo organised the first IOMMA, which took place in the 3 days before the festival started.

- How was it?

I enjoyed both immensely and felt it was a very worthwhile experience. I learnt a lot in terms of the broader industry and made some really good contacts from the Indian Ocean region and beyond. It was a unique opportunity to make the contacts and get insight and open gateways into new markets in other parts of the world.

- What was the highlight?

I wouldn’t say there was any one highlight, the opportunity as a whole was really a great experience with different aspects of equal value. Seeing amazing new acts, meeting delegates and promoters and festival organizers from all over the world. It was certainly an opportunity I am glad I didn’t miss.

- What was the Indian Ocean Music Market all about?

It was about creating a network of Music industry people from around this region, with objectives differing according to your role in the Music Industry. But ultimately it is about spreading talent and culture, opening up easy communication throughout the region and growing World Music from this region.

- What do you think of Reunion?

Reunion is kind of what you would expect from a tropical Island. It is picturesque and warm and obviously relaxed. We were obviously there for ‘work’ so didn’t do too many touristy things. It is a province of France so is governed by the French. What impressed me the most was the depth, government support & development and appreciation of music that comes out of this region. With under 1 000 000 inhabitants, Reunion has a thriving music scene with Sakifo attracting around 30 000 people a day. It is the ideal place to host the Indian Ocean Music Market.

- Are we going to see more collaborations in that direction?

Certainly. this is the idea. Certainly from our Cape Town festivals perspective. We will be including this talent in future years. In fact EJ von Lyrik and her band were with us and were involved with a collaborative project with a local act. Her band and the Mix n Blend Band took part in the festival. Representing!

- Anything else?

I think from a South African collective we really got a good sense of what needs to be done from a local perspective in terms of using this network further. But as importantly to really develop a network within the South African context that works to the benefit of the Industry here as well as abroad. Easier said than done but to see how other regions embrace culture from a Government perspective was really impressive.

There was a lot of interest from the other countries in South Africa. Both from a destination for their artists and an entry point into the African Market as well as tapping into our rich talent pool and introducing South African artists into their respective countries. Relevant South African artists must use this to their advantage as well moving forward.

Its great to see that a modest Cape Town Festival has been able to catch the attention of the Climate Change Leadership Awards for the second year running.

Loads of people ask us what makes Rocking the Daisies such a “green” festival and we have loads going on to ensure that our carbon footprint is as minimal as possible. One of the things that we can’t avoid is using heaps of energy during the festival weekend. Luckily, SA’s first wind farm is situated just around the corner from Darling, and we all know how windy the festival can be! Luckily enough, we have been able to tap into this sustainable resource.

Since May 2008, the Darling Wind Farm has generated sustainable wind-powered energy. Their initial intention was to divide the energy between Eskom and companies who wish to purchase sustainable energy off the grid directly. They have been doing so successfully for four years, but due to increasing demand, have opened up the purchase of energy to individuals as well. By buying your green energy directly off the grid, you are doing your bit to reduce our national carbon emissions.

Thankfully, our local government sees the great value in this too – “The City of Cape Town will use half [of the energy produced by the Darling Wind Farm] for its own needs and sell the remaining power to individuals and companies supporting green electricity generation.”

So what exactly does “green power” mean? By erecting these impressive yet graceful wind turbines, the Darling Wind Farm avoids the production of heaps of Carbon Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Nitric Oxide and fossil fuels (that leave unsightly scars on our landscape and contribute directly to global warming), to name but a few of the bi-products that occur when producing traditional energy. Not only that, the wind farm avoids the use of tons of water – something that SA is in very short supply of. Wind turbines get powered by wind, which then simply turn generators – its simple and beautiful! The wind farm not only generates power, but local job creation and tourism too! However, one of the best things of all is that this “clean” power is part of the reason why Rocking the Daisies can continue to be such a green, as well as world-class, festival!

This gem of SA’s sustainable energy is situated only 70km outside of Cape Town between Darling and Yzerfontein. Rocking The Daisies is proud to be part of this initiative and supports local industry by ensuring that we purchase energy prior to the festival and therefore guarantee that we have as minimal a carbon-footprint as possible!

It’s wonderful to know that the Cape’s biggest resource, the gusting wind can be converted into something so useful that doesn’t harm out environment. We’re a Cape Town Festival that tries our best to incorporate the best that our province has to offer and the Darling Wind Farm is certainly one these.

Perhaps it’s time to start thinking seriously about where most your energy comes from and to find out how to purchase sustainable and clean energy?

Sowing the Seeds has come and gone and oh boy what a party and a half. This small and intimate day festival has always had a very special place in our Rocking the Daisies hearts and we think it’s because of the great energy this festival always produces. Beautiful girls, smiling faces, laughing children, drinking, eating and a whole lot of dancing!

The event took place at the Old Cape Farmhouse in Scarborough, which is just far away enough to feel like a day out of the city but close enough to still be considered convenient! The greatest addition to the festival was the new Daisy Train, which was a new Black Label initiative that was an exciting all in one trip on Metrorail to and from the festival in true daisy style. Just <click here> to see the whole day captured by Don’t Party.

Rocking the Daisies is South Africa’s premier Music and Lifestyle festival. Taking place in Darling , just outside of Cape Town, the country’s first eco-friendly outdoor festival takes place from Friday 8th until Sunday 10th October 2010. Since the Cape Town based music festival began four years ago more than 26 000 eager festival goers have walked up the Daisy Lane to enjoy some of South Africa’s hottest musical talent.

Musicians from all over the country including dj’s, bands, comedians and performing artists gather in Cape Town to celebrate a music festival series that epitomizes the ideals of ‘play hard, tread lightly’. This motto is incorporated into every element of this music festivals organization. Complete Events are successfully promoting green initiatives and eco friendly alternatives while still being able to let people enjoy a truly South African music festival, situated right here in our beloved Cape Town.
